This is first fist attempt at making a cover page for my student magazine. I have followed one colour theme which was our school colours. Unforunately, I took the picture of these student on a background that was similar to their clothing which meant that I couldnt use the magic wand to bring them forward and leave the Masthead in the back.

SPIN is another one of the magazines that I decided to research. I love the layout of SPIN magazines as they re simple and the main cover star is never covered by cover lines and so the main focus will always be on the artist. I also love the photography of SPIN on every issue the cover star is presented in tune with their music genre and attitude. I wanted to research into their audience as if I adapt some of their conventions into my magazine, I may be able to make my magazine appeal to a wider audience.

SPIN target audience:

• Approximately 60% of total readers are male. As the majority of readers are male, SPIN would feature artists that are popular with males to appeal to a wider fan base. The photography and props used should also be appropriate with men to increase the reader numbers.
• Appeals to younger adults who listen to such music as indie rock, alternative, hip hop, soul, R&B and soul. 
• Median age is 29, with 40% of readers between ages 22-29 and 36% between 25-34. As the majority of readers is young adults, SPIN will target them more. Bands and artists that are popular with younger adults will be featured on SPIN to appeal to them and encourage more people to purchase the magazine.

I chose to analyse this cover page because I love this photograph. The underwater idea was great and the hair of the subject fell to the side in a really incredible way. If I had a waterproof camera, I would definitely use it to take a great picture of a subject underwater. The house style is simple and neat which and I always thought that the simpler the better. I especially like that the Pugs as they are done on a black background.

I adore this cover page as well. Especially the image, the colours blast and create the most beautiful and bright effect. The main colour was chosen after the photograph was taken and it was the editors that decided that orange should be the main colour. I would definitely pick a great, bright colour from the image to use as a main colour.

This SPIN cover page is amazing. It is unlike any other music magazine as it's not crammed with "stuff" that to me is just pointless. There are no advertisements, puffs or attention-grabbing screamers which only distract from the main image. The only writing is around the masthead at the top which does not cover the subjects in the image.
This definitely is inspiration for my magazine cover.

This contents page is another great one. It follows the same pattern as the contents page of SPIN magazine as a huge photograph of the main band is present. This again is great for inspiration as the photo take has humour which I might want to include in my music magazine so that the mood of my magazine is light and funny.

I really like the way that SPIN has set out this contents page. The photo looks like it belongs on the cover, however the rules were broke and it's adding colour to the contents page.
I would definitely consider doing something similar for my contents page. A big photo of the the subject that was present on the cover.

Preliminary Task MCU

These are some pictures I took of the pupils in my form. These are my first tries at taking pictures for my school magazine cover. I really like them because the students are smiling and they look like they take pride in their school spirit.

Codes and Conventions Analysis

This is a Kerrang magazine cover analysed with a lot of detailed and why its effective. I like this cover as its really punchy and its really outgoing and it grabs you attention really fast. The colours seem random and all over the place however they all play their part in the colour scheme and complement each other very successfully.
I have analysed it to help me create my music magazine cover and also to help me get ideas about what I want on my cover.

I really like this magazine cover as its really simple and yet in its simplicity its really grabbing. I also really like the angle that the picture was taken at, the shot from above shows a contrast to the usual covers.

Research for my Magazine. I'm looking for ideas for my front cover for my Music magazine. Analysed NME with The Vaccines on the front cover. I really like this cover because the main colour which is pink complements the black and white photo and somehow makes the main subjects stand out from the darkness. It's simple and elegant, however it is very appealing and not so bombarding in its nature.

Research - Questionnaire Analysis for School Magazine

I have constructed a questionnaire as a method to collect research for my magazine. It helped me to understand my target audience and later this questionnaire will help me supply a magazine that people will like. It will help me better my layout and my cover photo.

Most people chose Red as the primary colour. I agree as Red is a really catchy colour.
For the front cover most people expect to see students, this isn't surprising as students are the biggest part of the school.
Most people wanted local reports to be on post students and their successes, clubs in the area and sports competitions.


Everybody that completed a questionnaire wanted to see a puzzle page, and on that page they wanted crosswords and word searches.
70% of people I asked wanted to have a teacher interviewed on their interest and hobby's.
The Year 8 students that will be be picking their GCSE courses next year will have an information page as most people that answered the questionnaire want an info page.
60% of people want the magazine to be designed for the whole of the school and fo rit to be released monthly.

        Their website is very colourful in promotion of their new album "Turn Blue."

I like the layout of their website as it's hypnotic and also it notifies you of their new album release.

I like them because their songs put me in a trans and I like the rockin' way they use instruments.
