Target Audience: Codes and Conventions

NME's usage of Codes and Conventions to Attract Aud

On each issue of NME, codes and conventions are used to attract and appeal to certain types of groups that the magazine targets. In this case it's 25 year old men in full time employment with a knack for media entertainment. By analysing how NME soes this, I can make sure that my Cover Page does exactly the same to make sure I appeal to same type of audience.

Masthead
NME uses the convention of a dominal masthead in the top left corner which is both memorable and makes a great lef third. Also the letters are bold which creates the sense that the magazine is superior to others. The masthead appears modern in its shape, size and font and therefore will attract modern audience that enjoy moderrn entertainment. The font of th emasthead is simple yet really memorable which reflects on the youg and trendy target audience.

Image
The image is also domiantant and the cover stars are usally blocked to appear spacious and superior with their rebel and bad boy attitudes. The cover stars are behind small and fragile cover lines usally which attarcts fans of that specific artist. NME is a huge magazine and will always have popular bands on the cover, also they will be dressed to reflect the kind of music they play and the kind of attitude they portray to the public. The cover star is rarelt looking away from the audience as the mode of address creates a relationship with the reader.

Cover Lines
The other headlines are clear to read and never stray from the chosen and main colour theme and reiterates that they were placed there for a reason and thought and time has gone into choosing the right font, size and place for each of those cover lines. This creates a snese of simplicity throughout the magazine and appeals to the target audience: males. The cover lines also never completely cover or distract from the cover star, they subtly placed in around the image to appeal to the target audience.

Target Audience

Target Audience

I have completed the creation of my final draft of my music magazine "Sound Alive" and now I must check whether or not my target audinece will accpet and purchase my product. My magazine is a an indie rock magazine and is based on NME and that is the magazine that I researched. Therefore similar bands, articles, and headlines will appear in our magazines. My magazine will have interviews and life stories from bands such as The Black Keys and Arctic Monkeys.

The average age of an NME reader is 25. My magazine layout and cover star are indie and upscale just the right amount to appeal to 25 year olds. The price of £2.50 deffinitely is suitable for 25 years olds as my magazine will be released on a weekly basis. The study shows that the average NME reader is in full time employment and so can afford any reasonable price that the magazine will be sold for.

The target audience of NME on average also tent to be educated in other forms of media such as film and fashion and so to appeal to their other interests, on my contents page, I have added in reviews of films that my target audience would like such as Boyhood. The soundtracks in that movie are brilliant and I could also talk about them in my music magazine or pick the best ones. I have also picked the costume that my cover star wore to maximse the capiacity for which they can be appealed to my magazine.

The study also shows that the average reader of the magazine will spend most of their disposable income on new entertainment, tickets for concerts and gigs and even instruments. My magazine has many articles on many bands that the readers should go see and therefore I am appealing to their natural habits.

Drafting and Planning: Contents Page

Contents Page

This is a draft of my contnts page, however it looks pretty much complete. Maybe a couple of tweeks here and there to finalise it and make it look realsitic. I have tried to create consistency all the way throughout my magazine with the usage of similar coulrs on my Cover Page, Double Page Spread and the Contents Page. I had difficulty with doing that as I have used two different programs: Doubke Page Spread On Page Plus and Cover Page on Paint.Net. This meant I couldnt transfer the exact colour I used on the Cover Page but I sure got close.

The cover lines omn the Cover page are consistent with these and I have added two backup artists that have their picture on here as well. There is a lot of information on here and I have added in 73 pages worth of awesome articles. NME was the magazine that I researched, it is a weekly magazine and usually they have from 60-70pages. Sound Alive is also a weekly maagzine an dis in the good page range. I have also listed featuerd articles just like on the NME content spage.

Drafting and Planning: New Cover Page

Improved Cover Page

I have improved on my Cover page again after speaking to my teacher and he has given me some brilliant advice on how to improve/change/alter the cover page to make it better.
This is a link to my cover page before improvements. The difference is huge and my improved version is way better, more organised and has less negative space.

http://amateurpeople.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/drafting-and-planning-cover-page_14.html

This is my improved version:

These are the difference that I have added:

  • Name of artist made bigger and bought up to catch attention
  • Masthead made bigger
  • Quote from main artist was bought down to keep the whole story about the artist together and not spread out over the whole cover page.
  • Deleted the "What is wrong with me media?" article and swapped it for the Jordan Fields article which keeps consistency with the contents page.
  • Added the Red Lips article to get rid of negative space.
  • Bought another article from the contents page to the cover page "50 albums from the 50's"
  • Altered The Mechanics cover line
All these improvements made the cover page look more real and look alike the magazine that I researched. This cover page also will appeal more to the audience that I have targeted.

Article on Double Page Spread

After speaking to my teacher, he has analyses a couple of things that were wrong with my Double Page Spread, including the fact that my font size was too big. I was writing in font size 11 and the maximum size was meant to be 9, therefore I had to decrease my whole text. This meant that I had way too much negative space on my Double Page Spread. Negative Space is not something that is not often found in magazines and so I had to add to the story. I have added another aspect into Tom Harrison's life and in that extra paragraph I released how he primarily got into music. To kill some negative space I have also made some quotes bold to attract attention and add spice, colour and flamboyance to the two pages.

http://amateurpeople.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/drafting-and-planning-dps-improvemnt.html

This is a link to my first draft of my DBS, on there it can be seen, and now I realize, how boring and plain it is. Except the picture and the title there was nothing on there that seemed interesting. And so after adding in an extra paragraph and highlighting important quotes, the Double Page Spread is more appealing to my target audience.

This is the paragraph that I added:
Harrison’s father owned a record store that was the birthplace of Harrison’s love for music. “When I first heard Anything, Anything by Dramarama, I was shocked by the great sounds that instruments could make.” Each time after his father picked him up from the police station, they came to the store. Harrison's father entertained himself in the storage room with an Irish tea and Harrison fiddled with the big, black record player that was placed in the far back corner of the store. Harrison told us “I always took the best records off their stands when my dad wasn't looking and in my free time I played the life out of them. My favourite records where the ones that were freshly delivered, they had that plastic around them and that new record smell. After hearing a song played on a record player, all other devices are ruined for you. These records tough me life, patience and most of all love, things my dad could never teach me.”

This is the final draft of my double page spread after improvements and it looks amazing, the effects I have given it truly make it look like a real magazine.

Drafting and Planning: DPS text

I have to write at least 500 words for the double page spread for the main article. I have decided to do an article/ interview about my main cover stars life before music and how he rose into  being a rock god. This is my text that I have come up with. It will need polishing and adapting but this is the first draft.

The young artist that went from playing in his parent’s garage to being identified as a rock god among the youths takes the world by storm as his very first album debuts this February. He has kindly agreed to be interviewed by Sound Alive on his journey from the modern low life from the bad part of town, to a man   who is recognized worldwide for his talent. Harrison, a 25 year old pure bred Londoner started with nothing. He was raised by his father who became a compulsive alcoholic after his mother’s death and despite his father issues, he still inspired young Harrison. It wasn’t the booze or the drugs or even the late night gambling that inspired Harrison, it was his father’s passion for music. Harrison recalls his father when he picked up a guitar and says that “he always gripped it tightly and for a few moments that his fingers made the strings buzz, the world seem a smaller and kinder place. However after he put the guitar down, he freed his hands for more cider.” When asked about the hardships that faced him, Harrison didn’t mind his father as after his mother passed away they became almost strangers that shared a living room, but what he did mind was all the opportunities that he didn’t take when it came to music. Harrison told us “I started to learn to play guitar too late and that messed up my whole life, I watched my dad have 10 minute ramps on the guitar once a week and instead of learning, I just sat around waiting for my dad’s next drunk performance. Even though my old man was who he was, I still looked up to him as a reminder to never become like him. I don’t want to spend my life singing The Beatles songs in my boxers”

“I picked up a guitar for the first time when I was 16 – at that age, boys cared more about girls than instruments but for me at 16 something changed in my life. After my father’s death, learning to play guitar was the only way to keep at least one of my parents alive. I was a 16 year old orphan that was always at the wrong place at the wrong time.” Harrison recalls how he first got into crime because of his search for acceptance and lack of family. When asked about what he did after he turned 18 and left his foster family, Harrison simply replied “F***k all and nothing.” He went on to tell us that he regretted not trying to make it as an artist from an earlier age, that way he would have kept out of trouble. Harrison, through the ages 18 to 21, was arrested multiple times for driving under influence, robbery and possession of drugs which when asked about he said “Yes, I’m not going to hide it because people should know me, as millions of people around the world look up to me. They shouldn't and it is pretty messed up that teenage girls and boys look up to me and call me a ‘hard ass’ or ‘bad boy’ as if it was something to be proud of that I spent most of my adolescence getting arrested.” And so Harry Eaborn became Tom Harrison, the garage at Harrison’s father’s place that became his when he turned 18, became their practice space. Harrison added “we always had one thing on our mind: ‘what trouble can we cause now’ and it was hard for us to stop feeling like this as our life styles changed so much. James and I started working at Guitar Guitar which was a store that sold every musical instrument a guy needed to start a band. I struggled with paying for the house that my folks left me and so James and I lived together which helped me and the future of my career.” It was when Harrison turned 22 that the major changes started to occur: he got help quitting his drug addiction and James and him only visit the pubs to celebrate new singles to keep their alcohol levels low.

Drafting and Planning: Cover Page

Final Draft for Cover Page

This is my final draft for the cover page of my music magazine. I am extremely happy with the way it turned out and the whole codes and concentions techniques come together beautifully to create one good cover page. The colour cheme is used throughout and it matches the clothing of the main star which means there is a simbiotic relationship between the star and the magazine. This photograph is also an amasing choice as the star is maing eye contact with the readers and can persuade the reader to purchase the magazine. Also the star is giving off the correct vibes and the attitude is very much similar to a rocker. The fonts used also come together as all quotes are written in a font that resembles handwritig. The name of the star is also large and catches the eye of the reader. The left-third of the masthead is unique and original and differentiates from the rest of th emagazines.

Drafting and Planning: DPS improvemnt

this is my second draft of the double page spread which I have improved. In the first draft I forgot about simple technical codes such as the page numbers. In this version, I have added all the technical codes and changed the text to make the couple on the photograph to "not be the next Lennon and Yoko." I have also added another quote which is highlighted and very eye catching.

As it can be seen this version is way better. The quote stands out and the double page spread does not seem so plain as before. There is more colour and the theme of the cover page is carried on here. the page numbers are also present on both pages.

Feedback for Double Page Spread

Feedback on Double Page Spread

In class we have peer assessed each other's work and my assessor has told me that my double page spread is very effective and what went well was:

  • great usage of software (Paint.Net and Page Plus)
  • great picture - really clear and matches ethos of magazine
  • good layout of the picture and text
  • title of the article is presented effectively, especially the box
  • the article is in really deep detail
  • overall layout of the double page spread is effective as the title of article, quote, stars and text all works together
However, there are somethings that are missing and therefore to improve I must:
  • add typical codes and conventions such as page numbers
  • highlight quotes

First Draft Feedback

Feedback on Cover Page

In class we have assessed each other's music magazine based on a mark scheme. This is what I was told I did well:
  • used software (Paint.Net and Page Plus) excellently
  • good photography - really clear
  • consistent colour scheme all throughout cover page
  • the effect added to image enhanced the attitude of the cover star
  • cover star makes direct mode of address
I am happy with my cover page as it took me a long time to match the colour scheme to the cover star's costume. However, the assessor told me that to improve my cover page I should:
  • add a pug to cover page
  • add a subscription advertisement
  • add a sky line story or selling line for more effect
I do realize that typical music magazines are packed with puff, pugs, screamers and other advertisements, however I want to keep my cover page really simple so that readers focus on the cover star. I don't want things like pugs and screamers to distract from the main cover star as that image is just wonderfully amazing and it portrays the rebelious attitude of the star.

Drafting and Planning: Interview Ideas

Interview Ideas

As my feature articles on the double page spread will be an interview of the main cover star, I need to make the article suitable for my indie rock magazine. The star had a tough life, growing up in the bad part of London and getting raised by a father who was a drunk and a gambler. The star's mother passed away and the father drowned his sorrows in alcohol. The interview could be about how drastically his life changed and how well he is adapting to it. It could also be about his life before fame and how it differs from his life now. The star would have been getting into trouble from a young age and it would only have been after his father's death when he was 16 that he finally decided to pick upo a guitar. The interview could also be ablout what inspires him to write music as the star always looked up to his father as a reminded to not turn out like him and have dreams and goals to work towards. The interview could also be about his plans and hopes for the future. As the main cover star is getting married, the interview could be about how he wants his life to end up, maybe he wants to settle down after 10 years in the music business and have a family. Out of all these iseas the best one has to be the one about his life before fame as the most can be said and asked about his hardships and difficulties when growing up. As rockers usually have a hard life and come from troubled backgrounds, this interview would appeal to my target audience and this is the tupe of rock star they are expecting.
